I was at work so I couldn't watch the SEA Games Football Final match between Indonesia and Malaysia. We won the previous one so I was hoping that we would win again.

From friends' Facebook updates, it seems that many of my Malaysian friends, including non-football fans, were actually watching the match. These boys sure have united many Malaysians although for just 90 minutes.

Wait, did I write 90 minutes? It actually took longer than that to finish. I was following the match via updates  from www.futbol24.com. Indonesia scored first, then Malaysia equalised. It stayed at 1-1 until the end of 90 minutes. And there were also no goals during extra time.

It then went into penalties. Dup dap dup dap... Updates from futbol24.com wasn't fast enough, and with Twitter, I had to refresh. Then I saw Facebook's ticker thingy. You know that (annoying) thing on your homepage that lets you know what your friends posted or commented in real time?

Well I finally found a good use case for it. People were posting comments etc on what was happening. From "Yes, they missed," to "Stupid kick", and finally "We won!". Woot woot!

And hence my Facebook status and Tweet in the above quote. Heh.

On Monday 17 October 2011, I organised a lasertag event at Star Command, Trocadero Centre. It's situated above Piccadilly Circus tube station.

We had 3 great sessions of lasertag! There were 26 of us, split into 2 teams.

The red team won the first game and the green team won the second game.

After the second game, the Star Command guy asked us whether we wanted to have a free for all for the last game, or still play the team game. There were too many of us for the free for all, so we chose the team game.

And the third and final game was won by... wait for it... the red team! Hurrah!

We were all given individual sheets on our scores and detailing who we shot and who shot us. And I got the most scores on my team. Heh. But Arif, from the green team, got the most points overall.

All in all, it was a very fun event! Will definitely organise another one insyaAllah.

England played ok during their first game against USA (except that goalkeeping gaffe), but they were absolutely rubbish against Algeria.

My amateur opinion on what England's formation should be:

England will surely win against Slovenia with this formation! Hehe. Don't think that Capello will use this though. Whatever tactic he uses, I really hope that Joe Cole gets to play.

Update 23rd June:
So Capello didn't use that formation against Slovenia (as expected), but England did win nevertheless. Good, disciplined performance by England. (Though I still think will do better with this formation, well, maybe replace Lennon with Milner. Hehe.)

I went to Wembley with Amer, Apiq and Kat to watch the friendly match between England and Egypt. Headed there straight from work, meeting them at Marylbone station along the way.

I must say, Wembley is huge! Humongously huge. Yeah, I know, incorrect grammar but the stadium’s really big. And it looks good too. Inside, the atmosphere was great. We were in the home fans section but there were a few Egyptian supporters who seems to be a bit sesat sitting there as well with a huge Egyptian flag.

The funny thing was that when Egypt scored the first goal, there was another group of fans leaping for joy near us in the home fans section! However, I didn’t see them getting told off or jeered at. But then England scored 3 goals in the second half, so the celebrations were much much louder.

We had good seats because even though we were at the top section, our seats were in the front row so we had a really good view. Plus, all the goals were scored near where we sat. In the first half, Egypt scored a goal while England scored 3 in the second half.

Here’s what I think of the England players’ performance, with scores out of 10 in brackets:

1 – Robert Green (6)

Had an ok game. He produced a confident display and will probably be England’s first choice keeper in the World Cup. Oh now I know what the keeper does while play is at the other end of the field. Jumping around feeling bored I guess.

2 – Wes Brown (7)

Pretty solid display. Defended well and also produced some good crosses. Had a few bad passes as well though.

3 – Leighton Baines (6)

He was ok overall. He did try to create space on the left flank but it seems that nobody wanted to pass the ball to him. When he did get the ball near the opposition’s penalty box (which was passed to him by Milner might I add), he crossed the ball which indirectly helped Wright-Phillips to score England’s second goal. Defensively, he is ok but lacking in pace.

4 – Steven Gerrard (5)

Not a very convincing display from the Liverpool midfielder. He lacked the energy that he usually displays for his club. Maybe it was a friendly, but he should show more effort in chasing the ball.

5 – Matthew Upson (5)

He was a bit shaky in the beginning, probably due to nervousness. It was his slip that let Zidan go through and score Egypt’s goal.

6 – John Terry (7)

His first kick was quite bad but improved throughout the game. The boo boys were on him in the beginning but it died down in the end. Good defensive work.

7 – Theo Walcott (4)

He was quite inefficient. It seems that he doesn’t know what he’s going to do with the ball. He’s fast but wasn’t very good as England’s right winger.

8 – Frank Lampard (5)

Played ok but not up to his usual standard. Missed two sitters in front of goal. His passing was ok I guess.

9 – Jermain Defoe (6)

Had some good runs, but he didn’t seem to click with Rooney. I think he’ll be one of England’s main bench warmer if Rooney stays fit throughout the World Cup.

10 – Wayne Rooney (7)

Had a few sparks here and there. Was a bit more effective in the second half after Crouch and Carrick came on, but not as amazing as he should be. All of England would want him to stay injury-free for the World Cup.

11 – Gareth Barry (7)

Had a good game. Did his job well, helping the back four.

The subs:

20 – Peter Crouch (8)

Man of the match performance. Was at the right place at the right time. Connected well with Rooney but not with Carlton Cole. Had several smart flicks and good passes. Did some defending as well during set-pieces.

15 – Michael Carrick (7)

Had a better game than Lampard whom he replaced. Lots of good passes.

19 – Shaun Wright-Phillips (8)

Much much better than Walcott on the right wing. Really fast and quite intelligent with the ball. He set up England’s first goal and scored the second.

13 – James Mliner (8)

England seemed to have more pace after he came on. Played well on the left wing, which was mostly empty before he was on the pitch. Roamed to the right a few times as well.

22 – Carlton Cole (6)

Didn’t have much time to have an impact on the game but was ok nevertheless.

Wow that’s a bit long. I can’t comment on Egypt’s players because I only know 1 or 2 of them. To me, their best player was Mohamed Zidan. Not only did he score their only goal, he was also a real threat to England and outpaced the defenders many times.

Overall, England didn’t actually play very well, but they did play better during the second half. Crouch’s performance could earn him a starting position a few games in the World Cup. Come on England! =)

my projects

Nope, I’m not gonna write about projects at work, or the ones at uni for that matter. It’s a little bit different. Since I have some spare time and I’ve also bought stuff but haven’t used them yet or rarely used them, I decided that I’m going to commit to certain projects in my life.

What is a project? From the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a project is a specific plan or design, similar to a scheme. And what is a scheme? It’s a plan of program of action. Both of them have plan in them. So what is a plan? It’s just a method for achieving an end, or a detailed program. Okay, I think I should stop giving endless meanings of words now.

Basically, by having a project or a few projects, I’ll keep myself occupied and not get bored. So, if I suddenly don’t know what to do, I can just continue with one of my projects. You can also think of it as a to-do list, but that’s a bit boring isn’t it? I’ll have this and that to do, then after doing them, I’ll just tick some boxes indicating that they’re done. However, for a project, I’ll ideally put more effort into doing something, no matter what it is.

Okay, enough gibberish. So my first project will be… wait for it… wait for it… playing the Prince of Persia. You may disagree with me and laugh this project off, or belittle my enthusiasm for these projects of mine. If so…

Anyway, one of the reasons I thought about this project thing is that I’ve actually bought the game in November or December last year but had only started really playing it a couple of weeks ago. That’s a long time isn’t it. I guess I was preoccupied with other stuff.

Also, it’s something that I enjoy doing, so I think it’s rather a cool project to commit myself to. And I do a little bit of research as well on how to get certain achievements in the game so that I’ll certainly maximise the time spent on playing the game. If you’re thinking ‘Ak ela, semangat gila mamat nih,’ then please refer to the quotation above the Prince of Persia picture.

Another project that I’m currently doing is to sort out the photos from my Easter roadtrip. I went to Bath, Bristol, Tintagel Castle, Lands End, Eden Project and Stonehenge with some friends a month ago and I still haven’t sorted out all the photos from other people’s cameras. We went to a lot of places so you can imagine how many photos there are, hence many unnecessary photos will have to be deleted.

5. Study some engineering stuff related to work
6. Study history (interesting ones of course)
7. Read and understand the tafsir
8. Watch every f1 race this season if possible

10. Go back home for Raya!
11. Go travelling somewhere

See, it’s not just fun and games. You need to develop your skills not only at work but also for yourself, your life. I won’t need to draw up Gantt charts for my projects or do proper and detailed planning, but I’ll have things to do that I hopefully will enjoy. Oh there’s a Batman: Arkham Asylum game coming out and I am so gonna play it, so that should be on my project list I guess. If you’re thinking ‘Geek gila mamat nih,’ again, please refer to the quotation somewhere in the middle of this post..!

f1 red flag at sepang

What an exciting Formula 1 race in Sepang today. Too bad the rain forced the race to stop before all 56 laps were completed. The race started at 5pm Malaysian time, which is 3 hours later than usual. I assume some ‘clever’ guy at the top wants the Malaysian Grand Prix to start later so that the people in Europe don’t need to wake up that much earlier than usual. Heh.

The inconsistent weather forecasts made the race much more exciting. The teams were contemplating when they would need to change tyres to suit the weather and what type of tyres they need to change to. And when the weather did change, they were a lot of teams going into the pit-stop to change tyres, so the standings keep changing and changing. Hmm I noticed that I've written 'changing' and 'tyres' quite a lot in this paragraph. Won't get much marks then if this were to be an essay to be submitted. Who cares anyway. They were a lot of overtakings as well of course, besides the tyre changing.

But at the end of the day, the rain poured too heavily so they had to show the red flag, which means that the race had to be suspended and the cars had to line up behind the red flag line and wait until it’s safe to race again. It was actually dangerous for the cars to race in that condition. They were a lot of cars spinning at the corners already (which I secretly think is indeed a little bit fun to watch but is actually dangerous for the safety of the drivers, so let's just pretend I didn't think that ok).

Since it was getting too dark, and the 2-hour racing period was nearly over, the race wasn’t resumed and they used the standings at Lap 31 to determine the official race standings. However, the drivers (and constructors) only get half points because they didn’t complete more than 3 quarters of the race. Well, half points are better than no points at all.

And the winner of the Malaysian GP was Jenson Button from the Brawn team, his second win of the season. Looks like the Brawn team are doing very well. The Ferrari and McLaren teams seem to be struggling to adapt to the new rules. McLaren only has 1 point and Ferrari don’t have any points yet! Looking forward to the rest of the season. It’s gonna be very exciting, close, and fun to watch!

Wow, what a surprise. England actually won convincingly against Croatia, the team who kicked England out of the Euro 2008. Yes, I know that Croatia was a man down after nearly an hour into the game, but congrats to Capello and his men for playing well and winning the game.

I think most people are surprised as well. Here's a comment at BBC Sport Football from Mike T (via text on 81111):

It's the Hadron Collider - we actually have entered a parallel universe where England are good at football. Its the only possible explanation.

I have to agree with this guy. Hehe. Anyway, congratulations especially to Walcott for scoring a hat-trick. There's a light for England after all.

viva espana - euro 2008

Congratulations to Spain for winning the Euro 2008 yesterday! They were considered a team with the potential to win but who always flopped at the big stage. Well, they've fulfilled their potential and proven their critics wrong. And did they deserve to win? Of course they did! They were the only team that played well throughout the tournament, and they also played wonderful with very neat passing. They're not as fast and exciting as the Dutch and Portuguese at times, but overall, they are the worthy champions.

For me, this is the best Euro that I've watched. It's much better than Euro 2004 where a team who played defensively (read: boring) won the tournament. Most of the group matches were very thrilling, especially Group C (Holland, Italy, France, Romania). A lot have changed in 2 years. The previous World Cup finalists, Italy and France, both lost to Holland and drew with Romania. Holland played really well and most of their goals were just fantastic, especially Sneijder's and Robben's. And Boulahrouz played really well at right back. It was hard to believe that this was the same person who played central defence at Chelsea a few years ago.

All the champions of the groups won their first two games and rested most of their first team players during the third one. And all of them, except for Portugal, won their third group match. Now of course it's understandable that the coach would want to rest his first team so that in theory, they'll be less tired in the next games. Also, those on the bench want to play as well. It's great if one is included in a team in the Euros but it'd be better if one could play as well instead of just warming the bench. However, in the quarter-finals, out of all the group champions, only Spain progressed to the semis. Maybe it's because the others lost their momentum? Portugal and Holland didn't play as well as they did in the group stage. There wasn't much flair and the chances that they had were wasted. Croatia played okay, but were beaten by a very determined Turkish team.

Turkey. Wow. I think they're the most hardworking team in the tournament. Their mental strength is damn high. With players injured and suspended, they still played the same way. Be it the first or second team (or the third team if they had one), you can see that they weren't afraid of their opponents and never gave up even though they were behind. The important thing was that they played to win, which means they played attacking football, unlike Italy in the game against Spain, and Germany in all of their games except the one against Portugal. I really think the Turks deserved to win the semi-final match against Germany because of the way they played throughout the game. The Germans rode their luck all the way to the final and hurrah to Spain for beating them.

Now that this Euro is finished, I hope that the next one will be as entertaining, or even better. It's very nice to see a team who play very good football winning the cup, and I hope there's a lot more exciting football matches with plenty of drama in the World Cup in 2010 and Euro 2012.

i miss basketball

I've been on a study marathon for the past few days, and it won't be stopping soon. It's a good thing there was an IC MSoc Leavers' Party the other day at Hyde Park. And what a nice and lovely day it was. (Sorry, no leavers' party photos here. Check facebook. Don't have facebook? Too bad.)

Dapat break jap from my studies. Dapat makan2, main frisbee, played some football and take loads of pictures. Heh. But I miss basketball! Wanna play, but there's no time. When was the last time I played? Early March. *Sigh*.

malaysia lost, but malaysia won

Malaysia lost...

Kiko, Halim, Hairy, Colin, Hanafi and I went to Birmingham to watch the All England Open Badminton Championships semi-finals on Saturday. Only two events involved Malaysians. The other Malaysians, including last year's men's doubles champions, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong had already lost in the earlier rounds.

The first match was between Malaysia's doubles pair, Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and South Korea's Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae. The Koreans won the first set. The Malaysians fought back and won the second set. Most of the crowd were cheering for Malaysia. Shouts of ‘Malaysia Boleh!’ frequently filled in the silence.

During the game, one of the Korean players disagreed with the ref's decision. He kept protesting and then he hit the referee's seat with his racquet. What happened next caught me by surprise. The ref actually showed him a yellow card. I never knew that could happen. So what happens if he does it again? Will he be given a red card? Will the team be disqualified?

Anyway, the final set was tight. Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah were leading 20-16. Only one more point to win the match. Alas, the Koreans had a stronger mentallity and eventually won 23-21. Sigh. Why couldn't they finish the game off? It was very disappointing.

The next match was between Lee Chong Wei and China's Chen Jin. I had high expectations because Chong Wei had beaten Taufiq Hidayat of Indonesia in the quarter finals. Unfortunately, it wasn't a very good game. Chen Jin won and rightly deserved it. So that was the end of Malaysia's journey in the All England Open.

Malaysia won...

Halim kept receiving text messages on updates on the General Election 2008 in Malaysia. So we were informed of all the latest results even though we were in Birmingham, without any internet-connected laptops within our reach. I knew that BN would lose a lot of seats, but I didn't anticipate Selangor and Perak falling into the opposition's hands.

Nevertheless, congratulations to the rakyat for making BN open their eyes. Talks of BN being confident of retaining their two thirds majority, retaining certain states and winning a large majority in other states were just that. Talks. Words that come out from arrogant people who have lost touch with the people that they are supposed to be representing, the rakyat.

If one was only reading and watching the local media, one would be very surprised by the results. However, those who have been surfing the net on the goings on in Malaysia wouldn't be much surprised, since they have been exposed to the country's less flattering realities.

I seriously think that BN has underestimated the power of the internet. They have been criticizing bloggers and saying they were detrimental to the nation. They didn't realise that their action would just make people retaliate and despise them.

The opposition however have used the internet to their advantage. News that will never be published in the mainstream media is available on their party's websites. It's not just the opposition that write blogs, neutrals also have their own blogs, giving their critical views on both the government and the oppositions.

I think the fall of certain states and also the Wilayah Persekutuan seats was mainly influenced by the internet. People are more aware. They don't depend on the mainstream media only. Come on BN, the rakyat aren't dumb folks who need to be guided in everything that they do. They have brains you know, and they can think. Berfikir secara kritis dan kreatif.

Of course, there are many other reasons that caused BN to fall. Ethnic tensions, crime, and inflation are some of the major concerns of the rakyat.

Now it is up to everyone elected by the rakyat, whichever party they are from, to pull themselves together, and work for the people. It's time for you to fulfil the promises that you have made. Now that Plan A has been successfully implemented, I hope that your Plan B, Plan C and so on are good, if not better.

Work not for yourselves, but for the people that you represent, since you are the wakil rakyat. Our voices. Our concerns. Please don't let us down.

food and food and food and food

It seems that most of the posts in my blog are about food. Well I guess it's appropriate considering that the blog title is 'the milk', though milk isn't one of the ingredients of any of the many delicacies mentioned in this blog of mine.

I was thinking of writing something about politics, with the current situation in my beloved home country, but my weekend was full of food yet again.

ammir's nasi lemak

Ammir had some guests from Warwick who wanted to come over his place for lunch and he decided to make some nasi lemak. My housemates and I wanted nasi lemak as well, so he invited us all to come join him. Pear went there earlier to help.

I went there later to eat. Hehe. Ammir also baked a new york cheesecake. All the food was delicious as usual. Ria and Shimi really enjoyed them as well.

I stayed there to watch the FA Cup Fifth Round match between Man Utd and Arsenal. What a joy it was to watch Man U thrash Arsenal 4-0. Oh yeay! And since I just bought a Man Utd jersey with Nani 17 printed on the back that very day, it was double joy for me because Nani was superb during that match. He assisted 2 goals and scored a brilliant one. Tak rugi beli jersi dia.

Later in the evening, we went up to Flat 12 Chamberlain House. They were hosting a Chinese New Year steamboat celebration, especially for their non-Chinese friends if I'm not mistaken. Well, it doesn't matter. The important thing was that there was tons and tons of food to be eaten. Hanafi was very very happy.

Sorry for the lame theme. Haha. So I've finally made a cheesecake yesterday. I wanted to make a pineapple cheesecake, but Hanafi said he didn't like pineapple, so I went for peach instead.

I had two recipes to choose from. One from Zeehan, which I had obtained quite a long time ago, and the other from the book Nigella Express. I decided to mainly use Zeehan's recipe, but I also had a look at the other one. So it was a little bit of mix and match. Konon terer la nk ikut resepi suka2 hati. Hehe.

The verdict:

• Rasa cheese kurang
• Rasa almond extract lagi kuat daripada cheese
  
• Rasa peach lagi kuat daripada cheese

So somehow the almond extract 'overpowered' the cheese, even though I only used 1 teaspoonful. I'll try using less next time. So what flavour should I make next? Hmm..

paradise and takedown

Pear bought Burnout Paradise (Burnout 5) yesterday, because we (Pear, Hairy, me and some occasional help from Ammir) have already completed most of Burnout Takedown (Burnout 3). Well, Hairy and Pear were the ones who completed most of the events, to be honest.

It turns out that Burnout 5 is a 1-player game, so we can't play Takedown against each other. Boohoo. But the graphic is great. Lawa gila. It's a bit different from Burnout 3, but eventually we did enjoy it.

Just yesterday, we upgraded from Class E to D to C to B in the game. That's a lot of events completed, in just 1 day. Dah la kerja banyak sebenarnya ni. Haih.

And today, we had a friendly football game at Regent's Park. IC vs Westminster. During the game, I felt a mild strain in my right thigh. Damn, should've done my stretching longer. It still feels lain macam now, but should be ok by tomorrow.
